Description

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) has an opportunity for a Senior Director of News and Magazines.  This redesigned position replaces our retiring Publisher.  This leadership role requires a business development professional possessing familiarity and experience in multimedia science content delivery (print, online, mobile, video, etc.) and has a passion for science.


Summary:
Primary role will be to oversee and work with senior staff to further business development of existing products and identify new products to produce new revenue and reach wider audiences while upholding the quality of AIP' s content. In addition, the Senior Director will oversee AIP news, magazines, and other content areas to find efficiencies that identify new revenue-generating opportunities in science content, and determining value additions. The Senior Director will use their science publishing background and maximize AIP science content delivery in today’s climate of print, electronic, and social media. The successful candidate will serve as an active member of AIP's Leadership Team, contributing to AIP's strategic vision and goals and participate in Board of Directors' meetings. He/She will oversee financials, setting and monitoring budgets and operations for news content areas; as well as overseeing nearly 40 highly skilled staff members. He/She will travel to relevant conferences and events pertaining to the publication of science content.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10-years' experience in publishing science news and magazine content, including setting and monitoring budgets.
  • B. S. degree in business, communications, science or related field; graduate degree preferred (PhD, MBA).
  • Understanding of business development models for science content delivery.
  • Understanding of multimedia content delivery for diverse audiences.
  • Experience with print and online production processes for news, magazines and other types of science content.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct and manage high-level staff members.
  • Experience overseeing editorially independent editors.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
