SPS is a chapter-based society that exists to help students transform themselves into contributing members of the professional community. Within SPS is housed Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society, which elects members on the basis of outstanding academic achievement. This unique two-in-one society operates within the American Institute of Physics

SUMMARY:
AIP is looking for a Program Engagement Specialist to serve as the critical link across SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma, its stakeholders, and other functional areas within AIP.

The Program Engagement Specialist, works with the SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma Director and Associate Director to execute short to medium-term operational planning and evaluation of programs, contribute to medium and long-range strategic planning, develop, manage, and promote undergraduate student, alumni, and community engagement programs, and establish data frameworks and data management practices for these programs.

The Program Engagement Specialist is expected to understand the intricacies of the program's objectives, translating them into actionable tasks while facilitating cooperation among different teams across AIP. They must adeptly handle queries and concerns, serving as the program's representative and advocate to both internal and external partners. Effective in both team settings and independent work, the Program Engagement Specialist will monitor project progress and relay information to all relevant parties, ensuring all are aligned with the program's direction.

This hands-on program management position works with department colleagues, AIP-wide staff, key volunteers, member societies, industry partners, higher education, and the public sector to investigate solutions for, make improvements to, and develop new student and alumni engagement activities to advance the physical sciences and astronomy arena for undergraduates and society, promote engagement opportunities between students and alumni, and empower professional trajectories for graduating students and early career professionals.

WHAT YOU’LL DO: 

Program Management

  • Implement programmatic initiatives and program dissemination enhancements for Sigma Pi Sigma and SPS programs.
  • Develop, monitor, and manage annual budget(s).
  • Partner with SPS Director and Associate Director to generate and promote key policy development and long-range planning for the division.
  • Contribute to development and sponsorship opportunities alongside the AIP foundation, and lead grant writing and grant development for new and existing programs.

Undergraduate Physics Outreach

  • Work with SPS Director and Associate Director to further develop and implement projects that address the undergraduate physics experience.
  • Work with SPS Director and Associate Director to develop and implement projects to advance career pathways for undergraduates.

Membership Management

  • Supervise member engagement and membership data management for the division.
  • Manage efforts related to serving the membership of SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma.
  • Implement strategies for engaging alumni members of Sigma Pi Sigma.
  • Assist the Director with support of the SPS Council and Executive Committee, SPS chapters, physics departments, Member Societies, and the public.

Chapter & Conference Leadership

  • Represent AIP undergraduate programs at meetings of professional societies and other related conferences and meetings.
  • Work with content and engagement teams to effectively and creatively engage with members, volunteer leaders, and other stakeholders.

Staff Development

  • Supervise daily operations to ensure effective and efficient functioning of education and community engagement related programs.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and direction for program staff to improve student chapter participation and engagement.
  • Administer and manage policies, standards, and practices to ensure fair, consistent, and effective operations.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING: 

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree is preferred.
  • 5+ years of association/nonprofit experience or higher education experience preferred, with a demonstrated interest in science education and/or the physical sciences.
  • 3-4 years of experience in developing and leading student programs (STEM preferred) in a higher education or non-profit management environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in Google and MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Experience with data visualization and data management systems preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, which includes scheduling, record keeping and office management skills.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with management, fellow staff, others involved with special events, SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma leadership, and SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma volunteers, and the physical sciences and astronomy communities.
  • Self-starter, of high integrity, able to adhere to governance and confidentiality, and to function effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to travel and work outside of normal business hours is required. Experience in education, databases, and/or academia is desirable.

The team works in a flexible, hybrid schedule and reports to our offices in College Park, Maryland and Washington, DC as needed.
