SUMMARY:

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking exceptional candidates for the Product Innovation and Portfolio Manager (PIPM). The PIPM is accountable for the life-cycle management of AIP’s portfolio of programs, products, and services (PPS). This includes ensuring the portfolio is relevant, of high quality and value, and aligned to the Strategic Framework and FIRE goals, and that the portfolio meets performance expectations based on adoption of the PPS by AIP’s primary audiences.

The PIPM inspires and drives a culture of innovation structured risk-taking, and commitment to continuous PPS improvement which results in creative thinking across the organization to optimize and develop new approaches to meet the needs of the physical sciences community. This work includes understanding the changing needs of AIP priority audiences, defining the vision for new and improvements to existing PPS, gathering and prioritizing requirements for their development, and collaborating with others across AIP to assure financial and stakeholder goals are met.

The PIPM chairs the AIP Product and Innovation Council (PIC), comprised of a cross-functional team of staff leaders, which sets direction and provides oversight for the life-cycle management of AIP’s portfolio of PPS, inclusive of the evaluation to develop new, curate existing, or to sunset individual PPS, and making such recommendations to the AIP Executive Management Team (EMT). As the PIC Chair, the PIM prepares, provides, and presents reports of PIC activities and PIC proposals for PPS investment/divestment to the EMT.

To be effective, the PIPM will need to exhibit comfort operating in a change management environment where influence is a core attribute of leadership and work is accomplished by cross-organizational collaboration.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Develops, refines and executes AIP’s portfolio management strategy.
  • Reviews and evaluates existing PPS roadmaps and performance.
  • Brings forward proposals for new PPS, suggested improvements for existing PPS, and recommendations to sunset PPS that have reached their end-of-life to the PIC for consideration and action.
  • Drives implementation of and transfers knowledge on modern portfolio practices to relevant internal staff partners/stakeholders.
  • Effectively chairs the Portfolio Innovation Council. This includes: a) setting a regular cadence of meetings; b) establishing the agenda; c) preparing all relevant information for the meetings; d) delivering meeting materials to PIC members in a timely fashion to enable their meeting preparation; e) charting, coordinating, and reporting on the work of this cross-functional team.
  • Stimulates a culture of innovation, organizational creativity, and structured risk taking that results in identification, testing, and development of new, high-value, high-quality PPS that meet the needs of AIP priority audiences.
  • Ensures that standard processes are in place for the proposing and evaluation of new PPS, including obtaining market research, conducting pilots or developing prototypes, obtaining and analyzing customer/audience feedback, competitive analyses, and success metrics.
  • Interacts with internal and external partners and stakeholders, including AIP Member Societies, AIP Affiliates and AIPP Publishing, to refine and evolve strategies for building innovative solutions.
  • Works with AIP’s legal and compliance function to ensure that all PPS are designed to comply with relevant regulations and quality standards.
  • Collaborates with AIP Finance team to ensure that the AIP portfolio of PPS is supporting AIP financial objectives to fuel long-term sustainability of the organization.
  • Identifies and enables mitigation strategies to reduce or eliminate risks associated with product launches, market changes, or competitive challenges.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. PDMA NPDP Certification a plus. Educational requirements may be adjusted for applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience.
  • 3-5 years of proven work experience in product management or product marketing, including 1-2 years supervising staff or operating in a specialized program where influencing others has been critical to success.
  • Demonstrated success of driving and/or contributing to developing and executing successful program, product and service strategies. This includes acquiring and interpreting market insights, industry trends, customer needs and behavior, and competitive analysis.
  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, organizational, communications and presentation skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects of varying complexity simultaneously, while prioritizing and delivering on the most critical projects on time and consistent with organizational expectations for quality.
  • Experience and comfort operating in a change management and dynamic environment and leading a diverse team of cross-functional stakeholders through influence to accomplish organizational objectives.
  • Experience working with content and communications for a scientific audience is a plus.
