Scilight articles are 250-word, by-lined articles about breaking research in physics and related fields that appear in AIP Publishing's peer-reviewed journals. The ideal candidate will take several assignments each month with rolling, approximately one-week, turnaround. This is a contracted position that can be worked remotely.

Freelance writers will be part of a pool of professional writers supporting one of AIP Media Services’ products. We are especially interested in hiring new Scilight writers, who will be responsible for producing short (~250 word) articles about breaking research in physics and physical sciences, highlighting key concepts of peer-reviewed journal publications for academic and broadly technical audiences. The ideal candidate will have a Master’s or doctoral degree in the physical sciences and strong science writing experience. The optimal expected workload for Scilight articles will entail approximately four articles a month, each with a firm, one-week turnaround. This is a contracted position and can be worked remotely. Scilight articles are paid as a flat fee of $250 per article. Press releases are paid at $1/word.

Qualifications:
  • Technical familiarity and comfort with complex physical science concepts and the ability to read, understand, and distill peer-reviewed academic publications

  • Science writing experience, keen attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex technical material into economic and engaging prose
  • Excellent grammar, composition and proofreading skills, and the ability to adhere to our in-house style

  • Ability to reliably meet tight deadlines

  • Ability to work remotely and correspond with editors via email in a timely manner

Please submit at least two original writing samples that demonstrate the ability to write about technical topics in an engaging way.
