Director of Talent and Culture

As the Director of Talent and Culture for the American Institute of Physics (AIP), you will be a leader on the Talent and Culture team and focus your energy on creating, enhancing, implementing, managing, and evaluating programs and policies in talent assessment, learning and development, recruitment, and employee relations. Working on a team of five, you and the other Director (HRIS, benefits, and compensation), Talent Specialist, and Talent Associate will support the Chief Talent and Culture Officer (CTCO) and 125 AIP staff, while also providing support services to our member societies as needed. Working closely with the CTCO, you will determine how we intentionally evolve our organizational culture and structure into an institute that makes use of cross-organizational capabilities and agile teams. At AIP, we believe in the power of the physical sciences to shape a better world and we have embarked on our Strategic Framework for 2020-2025 to benefit humanity by advancing, promoting, and serving the physical sciences.

Using the strategic framework, you will support the CTCO in advancing the mission of the Talent and Culture function: to provide the people strategy, programs, and policies that cultivate an effective, talented, diverse, and engaged workforce that delivers excellence to AIP and its stakeholders. You will ensure AIP’s recruitment and onboarding processes incorporate best practices, and that diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and accessibility (DEIBA) are interwoven in all aspects of the employee life cycle (attraction, recruitment, onboarding, development, reward and recognition, progression and performance, retention, and separation). You will develop, implement, manage, and evaluate programs and initiatives that will enable our internal talent to deliver on the vision of AIP-2025. Although highly focused on talent strategy, employee development, and DEIAB, you will integrate with all aspects of the Talent and Culture function, including compensation and benefits, performance management, and the future of hybrid work at AIP.

Organization Overview

The American Institute of Physics is a 501(c)(3) membership corporation of scientific societies. Our mission is to advance, promote and serve the physical sciences for the benefit of humanity. AIP operates as a center of excellence using policy analysis, social science, and historical research to promote future progress in the physical sciences. We are also a federation, advancing the success of our 10 Member Societies. Over the past 400 years, the physical sciences have evolved as a powerful predictive model of our world, enabling stunning technological achievements, and enriching our understanding of the Universe and our place in it.

Consistent with the goals of our Strategic Framework:

Contribute to shaping and leading the Talent & Culture function including mentoring Talent & Culture staff.
  • Employee relations. Manage employee relations issues including inquiries, investigations, grievances, and resolution of staff and operational issues. Provide human resources (HR) consultive services to our member societies as needed. Maintain knowledge of and ensure compliance with employment, affirmative action, benefits, insurance, safety, and other laws, regulations, and requirements. Partner with Director HRIS, Benefits & Compensation on the Performance Achievement Cycle (PAC) to ensure performance management program meets its objectives.
  • Learning and development. Design and facilitate training and development programs for employees and leadership. Collaborate with managers to enhance coaching skills to support improved two-way conversations that provide feedback, focus on strengths and accountabilities, and are forward-looking.
  • Engagement. Develop and implement strategies responsive to AIP’s evolving culture in a new hybrid environment—supporting flexibility in when, where, and how we work—to assure an engaged workforce. Develop and implement strategies to improve engagement and address organizational challenges. Utilize organizational assessments and surveys to understand employee engagement and monitor the culture.

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree in HR or a related field is preferred. Certifications in HR, DEI, project management, and/or organizational development are desirable.
  • 10+ years of HR experience with a focus on learning and development, recruiting, employee relations, DEI, and organizational development.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating organization-wide programs, trainings, and policies to support workforce development.
  • Experience facilitating training and development programs for staff across all professional levels.

  • Builder. You build from the ground up, keeping an eye on the bigger picture as you navigate and innovate through challenges with a sense of fortitude. You enjoy engaging in thought-provoking business discussions and appreciate the value of sound business fundamentals and well-constructed policy.
  • Comfortable with change. You are comfortable with the inevitable changes brought about as a result of growth and development. You have a friendly relationship with ambiguity.
  • Organizational agility. In this position, you will have many stakeholders with varying goals and needs. You have a thoughtful approach; you are sensitive to the challenges and constraints each faces, yet understand certain issues take priority.
  • Perceptive. You see opportunities and emerging trends, and you are knowledgeable about the unique needs and goals specific to workforce development.
  • Judgement. You demonstrate excellent judgement, and you are a model of tact and discretion required of a trusted advisor and consultive human resources professional.
