Summary of Role:

Physics Today, the flagship publication of the American Institute of Physics (AIP), is seeking an Associate Editor who will edit feature articles, write news stories, and produce other content for the magazine and online. Physics Today was launched in 1948 with a mission to unify its large and diverse readership of physical scientists through its coverage of physics and related sciences. The Associate Editor will help fulfill that goal through editing and producing content to maximize audience accessibility and appeal.
 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
 
Edit feature articles spanning the full gamut of physical sciences 
  • In consultation with Editor-in-Chief, Features Editor, and the magazine’s art department, develop and monitor copy (text, graphics, and other related media) through all stages of acquisition, revision, and production;
  • In coordination with authors, edit material for accuracy, appeal, clarity, grammar, and style and prepare for publication.
Report and write news stories for the magazine and online
  • In consultation with senior editors, identify and evaluate story leads;
  • Research assigned topics; interview experts; obtain graphics and other relevant media; write and revise stories, with input from experts and colleagues; produce printed stories as integral part of department.
Develop and produce other content for Physics Today​​​​​​
  • Help develop, pitch, and vet content ideas; contribute various forms of digital storytelling;
  • Review and edit submitted content;
  • Work to expand portfolio of online offerings.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Review editorial matter such as potential articles and Letters, other editors' stories and articles;
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and other scientific meetings or webinars; 
  • Assist as needed with any department of the magazine;
  • Maintain broad contact with members of the physics community;
  • Assist with audience development and engagement;
  • Provide support for webinars and other emerging products.

Education:

  • A graduate degree in physics or related field is required.

Experience:

  • Previous experience in science writing editing is preferred.

Specialized Qualifications:

  • Excellent command of English, both oral and written, is required;
  • Demonstrable talent for writing and explaining physics-related research to a wide audience of scientists;
  • Knowledge of physics-related research in several sub-fields;
  • Ability to work well with others, both inside and outside the magazine;
  • Ability to multi-task and handle multiple assignments and priorities.
