Description
The American Institute of Physics is seeking multiple enthusiastic science writing interns who are passionate about cutting-edge science and reporting. These are onsite positions for undergraduate or graduate student journalists who have studied either news reporting or science, and can be part-time during the school year or full-time for any 10 -12 week period, including the summer, fall or winter of 2017. These paid internships are under the direction of the News & Media Services team. The part-time internship is expected to last for at least 8 weeks during the summer, fall or winter of 2017, and can be extended for the full term of a student's quarter or semester.

The internships are being offered under two areas of the News & Media Services department:
  • Inside Science - Its editorially independent news website. (1) vacancy
  • Media Services - Its public information program. (1) vacancy

Essential Functions:
The successful journalist candidate for Inside Science will be responsible for independently reporting breaking science news under the guidance and direction of AIP staff. This includes pitching, writing and editing news stories for: Inside Science News Service (AP-style wire service for science news) and the online content that accompanies Inside Science videos. The successful Media Services intern will work independently to write and research topics for press releases and potentially contribute to AIP's social media efforts. Course credit for internship requirement will be certified where applicable. Our office is located close to College Park Metro and University of Maryland, College Park.

Qualifications:
Interest and demonstrated ability in news writing; excellent writing and communication skills; very detailed oriented and internet savvy. Interest in science and experience preparing news items is needed.
At least one non-fiction news writing sample for a general-public audience is required. Please include at least one reference and specify your interest in a full- or part-time opportunity
