Description
The Niels Bohr Library & Archives, a special collection in the history of modern physics, astronomy, and allied sciences at the American Institute of Physics, seeks a Library Assistant to be responsible for assisting in library operations, including serials management, copy cataloging monographs, book preservation work, book digitization, and planning and participating in major library projects.

Essential Functions:
Tasks include maintaining serials collections, processing book donations, downloading catalog records from OCLC and performing copy cataloging, and assisting with tracking collection use. He/she will assist with book preservation and conservation, including basic book repair, ordering preservation supplies. Additional tasks include executing digitization projects and keeping library catalog records up to date.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and relevant library or archival experience (required) or Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program (preferred). Basic familiarity with library descriptive standards (cataloging rules, subject headings, and classification schemes, etc.). Ability to work with computer software (particularly Adobe Photoshop and MS Access, Outlook, Word and Excel). Ability to manage digital and paper files and documents according to internal naming conventions in a networked environment. Ability to operate office machines, such as copiers and a variety of scanners. Must be able to lift 40 pound boxes of library materials. Subject knowledge in the history of science not required.
