Description

To support the explosive growth of the Niels Bohr Library and Archives with the addition of the Wenner Rare Book Collections, additional temporary assistance is needed. This unique opportunity will provide two part-time Library Project Assistants the opportunity to assist with the intake and cataloging of books and related items from 350 years of physics history. Tasks include checking donations and book lists against the Library catalog, copy cataloging monographs and serials, classifying and shelving library materials, and other duties as assigned.

 

Flexible workday hours. Position available immediately and may continue until year end 2018. Our office is within walking distance from College Park Metro - Green Line and near the University of Maryland.

Responsibilities include:

  • Check book donations and proposed donation lists again the library catalog for duplicates.
  • Download book catalog records from OCLC; work with the Assistant Director to assign call numbers.
  • Perform copy cataloging to assist with major cataloging projects.
  • Other duties as needed to maintain library operations.

 

Qualifications:
Subject knowledge in the history of science is not required.

Bachelor’s degree and relevant library experience required with a preference of a Master’s degree candidate in Library Science from an ALA‑accredited program. Attention to detail, flexibility, ability to manage multiple priorities, able to work effectively with library and archives staff. Basic familiarity with library systems and procedures like cataloging and shelving. Ability to work with computer software (particularly MS Access, Outlook, Word and Excel).  Ability to operate office machines, such as copiers and a variety of scanners. Must be able to lift 40 pound boxes of library materials.

Additional preferred skills include existing knowledge of (or an ability to learn) appropriate methods and techniques for the handling, storage, and preservation of library and archival materials. Basic familiarity with library standards and practices like AACR2, RDA, MARC, OCLC Connexion, and ILS.
