Summary:

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking a highly motivated, organized and service-oriented Manuscript Archivist to preserve and maintain the manuscript collections of the Niels Bohr Library & Archives. This position will oversee our outstanding collection of over 30,000 photographs and other images; over 1,500 oral histories with many of the influential figures in the fields that we cover; and archival records of AIP and its Member Societies along with other archival records and personal papers of a select number of scientists.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Preserve and maintain the manuscript collections of the Niels Bohr Library & Archives.
  • Responsible for accessioning, describing, and providing access to archival items and collections, including institutional records, personal papers, and ephemeral items.
  • Creates and maintains descriptive resources to best make archival collections available to researchers.
  • Assists with maintenance of NBL&A web resources and outreach initiatives when necessary.
  • Provides general reference service to NBL&A patrons.
  • Supervise Archives Assistant, interns, and other part-time staff.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program, or a Master’s degree in history with relevant archival course work.
  • Minimum of five years professional experience in library and/or archives settings.
  • Knowledge of science is not required.
  • Knowledge of current archival descriptive standards and languages such as EAC-CPF, HTML, EAD, MODS, DACS and others.
  • Ability to work with computer software, particularly Adobe Photoshop and MS Access, Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Must be a team player and be comfortable collaborating with departments outside of the library
  • Must have excellent customer service skills
