Summary

PHYSICS TODAY, the monthly flagship magazine of the American Institute of Physics, is looking for an Art and Production Associate to work with the magazine’s Art Director in laying out, assembling, and producing each monthly issue of Physics Today. The Art and Production Associate will also help assure the design and visual appeal of the magazine, preflight and validate files and pages, and develop page templates, style sheets, and production procedures.

Essential Functions

  1. MONTHLY ISSUE PRODUCTION. With the Art Director, ensure that all editorial and ad pages are preflighted, placed, and soft-proofed; monitor and meet production schedules; maintain production records and magazine archive; assemble page counts for editorial staff; help prepare monthly map; serve as staff liaison with printer; maintain desktop-publishing templates and stylesheets; prepare reprint and digital-edition files; export all monthly editorial content to XML for posting online.
  2. PAGE PRODUCTION. Coordinate with the Art Director and editors to create, assemble, revise, and finalize layouts for all parts of the magazine; establish and maintain high quality standards; create final electronic files for the printer; prepare page-layout files for each issue; prepare and import manuscripts and equations for page layout as needed.
  3. ART AND DESIGN. Collaborate with the Art Director and editors to identify, design, create, retrieve, redraw, scan, and/or adapt all illustrations for the magazine; contribute to and implement a design vision for the Physics Today brand as well as for each issue, feature article, and editorial department; create graphics and other assets for online and other uses.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; degree in design, visual arts, or related field preferred.
  • Five years' experience in magazine publishing.
  • Experience in print workflows, type specification, layout, and design for magazines and advertisements.
  • Proficiency with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, QuarkXPress, CorelDraw, PhotoPaint, Acrobat, Microsoft Word, and other publishing and word-processing software.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects and strict deadlines.
  • Collaborative team player with strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Fluency with all aspects of typography, prepress, and established industry standards.
