Summary:

Reporting to the Deputy Executive Officer (DEO), The Senior Director, Education & Research is a strategic senior management role responsible for leading and supporting the Institute’s programs focused on education and research. This role will foster collaboration among the distinctive departments that span AIP’s education and research activities and enable each program to achieve its full potential. In collaboration with AIP education and research program directors, this Senior Director will develop operational and long-range planning and will lead in the creation of a shared vision that responds to the strategic goals and objectives of the Institute. The Senior Director will apply advanced knowledge and skills in higher education, research, leadership, budgeting, and administration to ensure the continuation of excellence within programs, projects and processes for AIP education and research programs. The Senior Director will cultivate relationships with direct reports and their teams, as well as with external stakeholders benefiting AIP’s mission and vision.

Key Position Requirements:

        • Master’s Degree or higher (PhD preferred) in a relevant field (such as physical sciences, history or philosophy of science, library and archives, social sciences or in another related field).
        • Strategic, visionary, and innovative leadership skills with 10+ years of relevant experience in a multifaceted organization of comparable size and mission to that of AIP in the not-for-profit sector, scientific education, and/or research.
        • Candidate must have a proven track record of scholarly work in a relevant area.
        • Proven confidence and ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders across many sectors and disciplines.
        • Strong leadership in change management with the ability to inspire and build a culture of innovation, teamwork, and accountability.
        • Administration experience, specifically in staff supervision, program assessment, and budget management.
        • Strong communication skills, emotional intelligence, with a focus toward inclusion and accessibility.
        • Certified Association Executive (CAE) certification or equivalent experience beneficial.
