The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking a resourceful, organized and collaborative Assistant Public Historian. The ideal candidate will work strategically and have a passion for engaging (or educating) a vast audience on the physical sciences.

The Assistant Public Historian will spearhead efforts on behalf of the Center for History of Physics (CHP) to engage primarily K-12 students and educators in the history of physical sciences, as well as students and educators in undergraduate physics and the public. The Assistant Historian will conceptualize, create, and promote CHP web exhibits and teaching materials.


Key Responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Working with other staff historians, non-AIP researchers, and representatives of Member Societies of AIP to encourage greater use of the history of physical science educational materials on the Center for History of Physics website.
  • Collaborate with the Oral Historian to produce oral histories especially intended to address K-12 students and educators.
  • Publishing relevant research and best practices for engagement in professional journals in physics, education, and history of science.
  • Manage daily operations and record keeping associated with the history engagement program.

  • Master’s degree in history of science; Ph.D. degree preferred
  • Experience promoting science-based endeavors and engaging the scientific community preferred
  • Knowledge of best practices in public history
  • Knowledge of Common Core and NextGen science standards
  • Project management experience preferred
