Summary of Role:

The Editor-in-Chief of Physics Today is the strategic leader of a portfolio of content created under that title. They are responsible for developing and managing content to serve audience and stakeholder needs.

The role requires cultivating and leading a forward-looking team of editorial and production professionals. Physics Today is a unifying voice for the diversity of the physical sciences as represented by the membership of American Institute of Physics's (AIP) Member Societies, AIP Affiliates, and the broader related science and engineering communities. As a result, success in the Editor-in-Chief’s role is critical to AIP’s mission and the achieving the vision outlined in AIP’s Strategic Framework.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership that expands the reach and impact of the Physics Today (PT) content portfolio;
  • Propose and develop new content products or distribution opportunities that fully exploit the capabilities of digital storytelling and publishing to exceed audience and stakeholder expectations;
  • Lead audience and stakeholder relationships, including maintaining a visible presence in the physical sciences community as well as a practice of consistent engagement with Member Society leadership, in collaboration with AIP’s Chief Federation Officer and Chief Content Officer;
  • Be a knowledgeable and articulate advocate for the needs of PT’s core audience and stakeholder groups;
  • Manage editing and production staff, instilling a shared vision and fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment and culture;
  • Collaborate with sales, marketing and advertising teams to ensure editorial and business needs are appropriately managed;
  • Stay abreast of publishing trends and technologies, positioning PT at the leading edge.

Strategic Leadership 

  • In collaboration with the Chief Content Officer, develop and execute a strategic plan for Physics Today that includes audience and financial goals;
  • Establish a culture of excellence focused on content rather than platform to allow for flexibility in meeting audience needs;
  • Develop a culture of data-driven decision-making within the PT team;
  • Maintain a culture of agility and adaptability among PT staff to thrive in the rapidly changing environment of content publishing and distribution;
  • Within AIP, serve as a senior leader on content matters, helping set and implement the Institute’s content strategy;
  • Develop content and distribution partnerships as appropriate.

Editorial Oversight 

  • Oversee the editorial content and voice for PT, setting standards of excellence in clarity, accuracy, integrity, and innovation in presentation across products and channels. Set editorial strategy, policies, and guidelines;
  • Ensure the health, breadth, and diversity of content streams;
  • Oversee hiring and staff development;
  • In coordination with Chief Content Officer, plan and manage PT budget.

External Relations 

  • Foster constructive relations with Member Society leadership;
  • Maintain a visible presence in the community of physical scientists through conferences and other interactions.
     

Education:

  • Graduate degree required, in a scientific field, strongly preferred
     

Experience:

  • 7-10 years’ experience in science, science journalism, and/or publishing;
  • Minimum 7 years of managerial/supervisory experience;
  • Exceptional command of language and grammar;
  • Excellent writing, editing, organizational, supervisory, and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong familiarity with the publishing industry and with digital publishing, technologies, and delivery formats.
     

Specialized Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated understanding of digital publishing trends;
  • Audience focused approach to journalism and content creation;
  • Results-oriented, flexible, creative, and strategic thinker able to develop, recognize, and seize new opportunities.
  • Insatiable curiosity.
