The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking a Director of Strategic Marketing and Communication who will lead the development and execution of AIP’s marketing, branding, and creative strategies.

Essential Functions:
The Director will have responsibility for building the visibility and impact of AIP programs among different communities for new and existing programs, products, and services. This role will play a critical part in furthering the value and consistent presentation of AIP to its Member Societies and the public. Within a matrix environment the Director will oversee a staff of marketing and creative professionals to ensure that AIP has integrated, coordinated, and well-executed marketing and communications.

This position will be responsible for:
Leading the development and execution of AIP’s organizational brand and marketing strategy ● Partnering with AIP divisions to identify goals and develop comprehensive marketing plans for AIP programs, products, and services ● Conducting market research ● Developing and overseeing communications across multiple channels ● Working with internal stakeholders to ensure that all marketing and communications plans are consistent and mutually supporting ● Maintaining AIP branding guidelines ● Creating strong marketing messages and copy for integrated marketing campaigns across print, signage, web, email, social media, and other digital channels ● Directing corporate communications strategy and ensure a consistent organizational voice and message ● Developing and having responsibility for a strategic marketing and communications ● Ensuring AIP’s marketing and communications strategy remains leading edge, including the integration of evolving marketing technology and digital marketing capabilities ● Overseeing corporate communications for corporate awards, press releases, newsletters and the AIP website.

  • MBA in marketing or communications with at least 8 years of relevant experience, or in the absence of an MBA, demonstrated equivalent track record of success.
  • Demonstrated high quality and accuracy standards with a keen attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience developing and executing marketing plans within a non-hierarchical team setting.
  • Ability to direct multiple projects and lead the team to work across departments to meet the objectives of AIP.
  • Experience directing internal teams and external resources.
  • Experience in market research, assessment and analysis.
  • Experience leading and motivating a creative marketing team. Understanding of business development in a not-for-profit setting.
  • Experience in marketing via many media: email, social networking, websites, telephone, and direct mail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Conversational familiarity with science and the role of research in advancing human welfare.
  • Non-profit experience (highly desired).
  • Knowledge and understanding of the broad physical science communities, the role professional societies play in serving those communities and the type of outreach activities those societies engage in (desirable).
