SUMMARY:
AIP is looking for a Senior Designer to join our Visual Experience Team.
The Senior Designer works closely with the Art Director as an individual contributor with advanced knowledge to develop, maintain, and refine vision for the look and feel of Physics Today (PT) magazine and its online activities.
This role will confer with editors and the Art Director to design graphics and layouts for magazine content, coordinate the efforts of freelancers, and share with the Art Director the independent responsibility and decision-making for producing each monthly issue of Physics Today. In addition to this, you will collaborate with other stakeholders as a member of the Visual Experience team to support the branding and visual needs of AIP’s programs and publications.
The Senior Designer excels at time management and in meeting deadlines, ensuring that all design projects are completed and delivered on time.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Help establish visual look for the magazine and PT brand; design covers; partner with editors and Art Director to conceive, create, review, and adapt photos, drawings, technical figures, and other illustrations for the magazine and online efforts.
- Coordinate efforts of freelance artists and designers as needed.
- Design, lay out, and assemble pages for Physics Today. Within page and time constraints, create designs and layouts for magazine articles and departments.
- In coordination with Art Director, produce finished pages for publication.
- Print production, including helping prepare monthly map, providing printouts and page counts to editorial staff as requested, preparing materials to send to the magazine’s printer, exporting monthly editorial for PT online with Art Director, all while meeting monthly deadlines.
- Work independently and assist or lead designers on multiple, concurrent projects.
- Assist Visual Experience Director by leading projects requiring multiple designers.
- Conceptualize, produce, and implement creative solutions independently and as a team leader.
- Manage multiple, concurrent projects and ensure their on-time delivery.
- Design and produce print and digital products for multiple departments as assigned.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of essential programs, skills, and best practices related to design and production of print and digital material.
- Advise on hardware, software, and online service purchases.
- Other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING:
- Bachelor's degree in Art, Design, or other relevant field is required. Master’s degrees are a plus. Educational requirements may be adjusted for applicable work experience.
- At least 7 years experience in art and design, including print magazines, online publications, and web production. Work experience may be adjusted for highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience.
- Demonstrated ability to visualize, design, and produce engaging scientific graphics.
- Demonstrated creativity and attention to detail.
- Demonstrable expertise in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of collaborative design tools (e.g., Miro), Content Management Systems (CMS) and Project Management Software (e.g., Monday.com) a plus.
- Extensive familiarity with typography, color, composition, layout, logo design, and print production.
- Demonstrated ability to be a team player, able to balance competing priorities and multiple projects while meeting strict deadlines.

COMPENSATION: $77,440.00 - $85,184.00

The team works in a flexible, hybrid schedule and reports to our offices in College Park, Maryland and Washington, DC, as needed.
